Planet Earth is a great documentary series does anyone know how long it took to make?

The amazon blurb for the DVDs say ‘5 years in production…2000 days in the field, using 40 cameramen filming across 200 locations’.
wikipedia doesn’t say how long it took, but gives more info on episodes.
It’s an amazing series.
