Question by Cellulapse: Where are all of the Todd Solondz fans?
Whenever the topic of American independent cinema comes up, it’s always disheartening to hear the conversations inevitably drift toward predictable, pointless fare (Juno, Little Miss Sunshine, Garden State and anything by Tarantino come to mind.)
I believe the only real important American filmmaker alive today is Todd Solondz, who in only four films (Welcome to the Dollhouse, Happiness, Storytelling and Palindromes) has shown a fearlessness and razor sharp eye for truth and accuracy in modern American behavior that is unmatched by any other auteur alive today.
Yet, I very, very seldom come across anyone who has even heard of him, let alone appreciates or admires his films. Is anyone here a Solondz fan? If so, what about his films particularly compels you?

i’ve seen welcome to the dollhouse and happiness. i call myself weinerdog sometimes. i’m not a fan of his, but i appreciate his work and will give it a chance. it’s just that, to me, his movies are depressing. i don’t think the non-solondz movies you mentioned are pointless or predictable, just completely different from solondz’s (and each other).
