Question by connorlawhorne: What is the best way to obtain the rights to a song to be used in a short film?
I am making a short film and there are two songs I want to use. The first song is Lovecats by The Cure, and the second is Just What I Needed by The Cars. The actual recording of The Cars song won’t be used, but a character in the movie will be playing the song (do you still need rights for that?). any ideas on how I could get permission to use these songs would be great.

Contact the label or the agency that represents the artists who made the song. You may have to pay some kind of fee, depending on how popular or how big of a hit the song was. Most labels know independent films have small budgets, you may get a break there. Good luck with the film!
