Question by lightss: I live in England but want to go to University in the US?
i am sixteen and from England,
i have just started my first year of college.
and next year i will have to start looking around at university’s.
i have always wanted to move to America since i was 11.
I’m doing a course purely based on media production at the moment,
it’s what i love.
editing video’s/films is what i like best.
i visited California this summer for 3 weeks. and it’s clear to see the very best things in film happen there.
i would love to study there but i have no idea about the uni’s there or any of the extra information.
costs? how long courses are? which uni’s there are? living costs/where to live?
are international prices higher? what are the legal requirements in staying in the US?
i know i will talk to a careers adviser with my college about this next year, but i want to know at least a bit of information now, as it’s a big thing.
i’d be grateful for any advice/help….
much love xx

Here is my advice(I am a college student now):
Start out at a community college. They are cheaper than a university but only last 2-4 years and you couldn’t get your degree there. However, you can get the credits to get your degree so when you transfer to a university you will have half of your degree already completed for a fraction of the cost. A lot of community colleges have places you can live at on campus(like the one I attend) and they will work with universities to transfer your credits.
From there obviously transfer to a good university(one that is good on your wallet especially) and complete your last 2 years or 4 or 6, however long you want to take. I am majoring in history so I can do 4-8 years but I don’t know about film. I think it’s only 4. So you will only need to complete 2 more years.
Just so you have an idea though, a community college will cost you around $ 1500 a semester(including book costs) where a university could cost you up to 10X that or more.
