Question by Santiago Luca: What do you think about my cover letter?
I´m a journalism student applying for an internship at UNAIDS. Since English is my second language, I would appreciate if someone could tell me what they think about my writing and overall structure, am I skipping something important? Am I being clear enough? Any suggestions welcome! Thank you!!
Body:
My name is Douglas E. Gómez Mendiburu and I would like to be considered for an internship at UNAIDS starting spring 2010. I am a junior at University Americana, working toward my bachelor´s degree in Communication Studies, focusing on international broadcast journalism.
As a person who grew up in the US – Mexico border, I have always had an interest in international affairs, cultural diversity, art and media. My work background and coursework have supplied me with many skills and a wide understanding of the world; for example, I worked as the Director of Caldero.tv, an investigative television newsmagazine which focuses in topics of culture and society. I performed an extensive range of tasks, mainly coordinating work groups, assisting in the managing of resources and conducting interviews to personalities with very diverse backgrounds. Also, I have taken several workshops and courses on documentary filmmaking and journalism, listed in the attached resumé.
I am a great team work player who learns fast and adapts easily to new environments. I´m aware of the great labor UNAIDS does and I believe that I would an asset to your program. This internship would provide me with the ideal opportunity to assist at the organization and to expand my learning skills.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Douglas E. Gómez Mendiburu.

Overall, I think it’s a good cover letter, especially considering that English is your second language. There are a couple of things I would change, though:
Instead of “in” you’ll want to say “grew up on the US-Mexico border” and “focuses on topics of culture and society.”
Instead of “conducting interviews to personalities with diverse backgrounds” it should be “conducting interviews with people from diverse backgrounds.”
Instead of “team work player,” just “team player” will do, and instead of “great labor UNAIDS does” I would go with “great work UNAIDS does.”
Good luck, and I hope you get the internship!
