Question by Peter: Program to remove white noise without removing or lowering the quality of any other background noise?
Hi Guys,
I have a question. I am putting together a movie right now for my film making class and some of the scenes are quite which means that I have to put the volume higher in Premier Pro. Now in the scene there was an air conditioning going which made a noise. If I put the volume higher, the noise is very noticeable from the air conditioner. Is there a program that can remove any sound that repeats all the time without lowering the quality of the talking in the scene. Right now I tried Hiss remover in Soundbooth and it helps a bit but it also lowers the quality of the talking, it makes it sound as if the people were inside of a box. What can I do?

I don’t know how the hiss remover in Soundbooth works.
As a general default setting the range of frequencies it removes could be too broad.
Audacity has a noise removal function whereby a few seconds of just the noise is selected then it’s removed. Worth a try if that can’t be done in Soundbooth.
In any event it will always have some effect on the other content.
Being able to select just the air conditioner noise will minimize this.

White noise is easiest explained as the hiss present between radio channels.
Background noise is the problem you have but could be anything you don’t want in the recording. People talking, traffic noise etc.
