I am independent filmmaker that always thought search engine optimization (SEO) was a tool used by online hucksters to separate people from their money. I changed my mind after seeing how effectively my good friend Tim Beachum SEO & Internet Marketing Consultant promoted the indie feature Consignment. He co-produced and edited the movie with me. I knew he was tech savvy, but had no idea how much he knew until he went into action.
After completing the movie he suggested we stream the opening 10 minutes online for free without any interruptions. Being an independent movie there was not any big money to launch a full blown marketing campaign, so reluctantly I agreed to go along with his idea. Jackpot! There was a massive response from viewers. People were watching the opening 10 minutes and getting hooked.
Our online DVD sales took off. At that point we were self-distributing selling single DVD’s of Consignment as we looked over distribution offers from other companies. Tim developed a sweet viral online marketing campaign for Consignment that was getting major results. I started to pay close attention to what he did to promote the movie. Two things jumped out at me.
Not only did Tim set it up so people could watch the opening 10 minutes of Consignment via stream, but he made it so people could find it. The Internet is massive and cluttered. He researched keywords and phrases to drive traffic to our streaming site. I was getting a better idea of how SEO can work for independent filmmakers.
Tim also set it up where we could submit the movie trailer to all the top viral video websites like YouTube, Vimeo, Metacafe, and Veoh in one pop. He automated the process saving a lot of time since we did not have to visit each website and manually upload. Even it only takes 5 minutes per website multiple that by a hundred sites, those minutes add up to hours.
I’m grateful that I learned how useful SEO marketing is for indie filmmakers. If you pay attention to keywords and phrases you will attract more viewers to your movie because they will know it does exist.
I’m now a filmmaker that believes in the power of SEO marketing. So much so that before I write a screenplay or think about producing a movie I think in terms of SEO marketing first. My next two movies are titled with keywords and phrases in mind. I do not have a studio budget to market my movies. I have to rely on grassroots SEO marketing to get the word out. SEO for filmmakers can get your movie seen. This is indie filmmaker Sid Kali typing SMASH CUT.
