The Native American Sunrise Ceremony is held every year on Alcatraz Island. This Native American Sunrise Ceremony is an occasion to honor and give thanks to the Native American people. The unique thanksgiving of 1621 was intended to offer gratitude for the crop. This crop was possible because of the assistance of the native people of America provided to the Pilgrims. The year earlier than lots of Pilgrims had passed away because of hunger. The Pilgrims learned from the Native American people about the various types of agricultural methods which were very successful.
The story behind this ceremony is a very shaky one; in the middle winter of 1620 the natives witnessed the arriving of the Pilgrims in the region recognized these days as Plymouth MA. These people were though not the first to arrive on these coasts. In the year 1614 some British voyagers had previously arrived there. When they departed they picked 24 Native Americans along with them as slaves and left gonorrhea, syphilis, and smallpox. That disaster wiped the tribes of New England totally.
The fresh 1620 colonizers did not know about farming as a result their harvest failed disastrously. The following year William Bradford announced a three-day banquet following the first harvest. Afterward turned into a portion of the Thanksgiving. The Pilgrims did not term it that nor were the Native Americans who are present at the feast still invite. The invitation was just to head Massasoit and Squanto. They took their 90 brothers and sisters along with them to the feast. As a result the Native Americans were never invited back again.
By 1641 things had in fact started to go down and the Indians neglected. A 1641 slaughter of the Pequot’s in CT was extremely triumphant so much, that the churches announced a thanksgiving day to mark win over the at present ethnic first peoples. This was the day when the term thanksgiving was first used. In addition at the same time Manhattan’s Governor proposed the first use of selling of Native peoples of 20 shillings and 40 for every captives they can utilize to sell into slavery. Authorization was allowed to enslave or rape any Native American women and enslave any young person below 14. By 1675, under Metacomet attacked back to retaliate. But Metacomet was tracked down and terminated by the Europeans. Early American history set off to respect those who would bestow to the racial extermination of the Native Americans.
Thanksgiving originally a custom of the Native American People is an occasion to offer thanks to the maker for the reward of the harvest and their existence. As the final crops were collected, this time was taken to return and offer thanks to the mother earth. Today thanksgiving ceremony is celebrated by the name Native American Sunrise Ceremony in which all people offer thanks to Native Indian’s for their contribution for this country. Surprisingly, no one has ever put this amazing tradition into a film such as Curt Johnson’s production company Indie Genius Productions. It would surely be a story to become an Academy Award winner or fit into Christian family film news for its traditions.
Sadly, this tradition was made illegal in the United States until 1975, but now because of it’s cost, the tradition is once again looking to disappear. After witnessing the beauty of this sacred rite of passage, filmmaker/documentarian Curt Johnson is working to keep this tradition alive.
Indie Genius Productions has been around since 2001 and worked on award films documentaries and best horror movies. Films include Thoth, Your Mommy Kills Animals and American Drug War.
