Question by Rock of Life: Questions about becoming an Entertainment Lawyer?
I’m a high school Junior who has been taking film editing classes since freshman year. In these three years, I have developed a love for editing. When I go to college I want to major in film editing, but there really isn’t a big demand for film editors, so there wouldn’t be a lot of job opportunities.
I was recently talking to my teacher and he told me that once you graduate with a degree I shouldn’t have trouble finding jobs at local tv stations. He also told me that if I planned on going to law school (which I do) to major in editing and then go into entertainment law. According to him, those classes will help in that type of law.
Personally, I’ve never really never heard of that type of law, so I have questions about it:
1. What does an entertainment lawyer do? (especially one focusing on film and probably theatre)
2. How hard is it to find a job as an Entertainment lawyer?
3. What is the starting salary for an entertainment lawyer?
4. Is New York City a good place to find work if I plan on specializing in film/tv? (I’m thinking of also specializing in theatre as well).
Thanks for your help!

There isn’t much of a market for lawyers, either. All lawyer jobs, including that of an entertainment lawyer, are hard to land. Not all of them make money and represent Jay Z or George Lucas, either. You can represent an indy filmmaker and call yourself an entertainment attorney.
In the end, you have to evaluate your chances of success in this industry. Both law and the entertainment industry are ultracompetitive. It’s true that the successful ones do very well, but the numbers show that many pay a steep price without the desirable results.
