Question by utopian.outcast: Where are some places in cleveland to get filmmaking experience?
I was wondering where in Cleveland Ohio, is a good place to get film making experience. Through work, volunteer, internships, or helping out on a project. Any ideas
any other ideas, that would work anywhere? Should I join a theatre group of some sort??

Specifically, what kind of experience are you looking for? Are you hoping to shadow a specific Department Key or would working as a Production Assistant be good enough for now?
I’ve listed some links and contact information below to help get you started, but you should start by contacting the Cleveland Film Commission to find out if any projects are being shot in or around the area. If yes, then you’ll want to get in touch with the Production Coordinator for the project and let that person know what you are interested in. Try to be as specific as possible. If you are unsure of what all the positions are on a professional movie set, I urge you to read the book, “What I Really Want to Do: On Set in Hollywood” which describes in exactly detail how a typical day on set truly goes.
If there are no professional films taking place, look toward local filmschools and/or workshops for small indie and student projects. Those type are usually very welcoming of free help, but again, the more specific you can be about what you are interested in and what you CAN do will help you. Calling and just telling someone that you’ll do “anything” won’t inspire confidence in you even if it is a low-budget project.
It is also helpful for your career to work with actual professionals no matter if it is on a movie or something else. Scour the internet and phone book for local production companies. They will likely be producing corporate video, industrials, and/or commercial production. Don’t shrug off the opportunities to work on any kind of production as there is always something to be learned, even if it is a “bad” experience.
Good luck!
