Question by BrainSpecialist: Which is better – Canon 5D mk 2 or the Canon 7D?
I’m a filmmaker who wants to buy the best HD video camera for my buck. People keep recommending to me the Canon 5D mk2 or the Canon 7D. I want to know, which is better? If there are better digital video cameras, for the same or a lower price, what are they?

If you want the best HD video camera for the money, you do NOT want a DSLR. What you want is a real camcorder because what you are forgetting is the cost of lenses, the DSLR camera mount/rig itself, a follow-focus cam system, and probably a seperate audio recording device because the built-in audio of either these camera will fall short of anything you want for a film of any quality. Remember that both these camera are primarily designed to shoot still images…Video is an added feature but not the primary job of the camera. By the time you are done rigging one of these things up with a decent support platform from Red Rock Micro and the lenses you’ll need, you’ll find a professional camcorder offers far better value for the money, especially if the video image quality is an important factor. What makes DSLR video so appealing is the fact you can use 35mm SLR camera lenses to record video and the control of depth of field this provides. The downside is the video image quality is still not as good as that of a true video camera using 3 sensors rather than 1 and there are additional costs that people aren’t considering when they see the “cheaper” initial purchase cost of the camera body alone. And if you aren’t going to record your audio seperately and sync it up with the video in post production, don’t bother considering a DSLR for video.
