Question by Josh P.: Going to film school. Bad choice?
Hello. I’m an aspiring tv/film major college student, and I was wondering if I could get some suggestions or ideas regarding what I’ve been doing so far to advance my career of my choice.
Currently, I am attending a community college to transfer to good film schools and working at a local online/television commercial production company.
Mostly I go to sets and help out with setting equipments and run the teleprompter. Time to time, I go to the office and help out with editing.
I wish to become a movie director in the future and be successful in the television/movie business, so I decided to work to get the gist of how this industry feels like.
First this internship started as something not-so-serious. But I’ve working here almost more than a half of year and I even started to get paid and I’ve been taken as one of the “official” crew.
My question is, do I even need to continue my education at college to transfer to a film school to learn about the things that I’ve already learned by working? I’ve been hearing from lot of people that only good thing about film schools is the alumni that may support you after graduation, aka “hook-ups.” If that is true, then I would rather continue working and study on my own.
If you have any suggestions or ideas, please share any ideas with me. Any type of comment is appreciated. Thank you!

If you’re already working then you’re building your resume and wouldn’t need school.
If you want to be a director, I would suggest going to school to study film making and acting. The theory behind both will make you a better director.
