I know the answer, I used to distribute her films. I wanted to see how many in Women’s Studies really know the topic. 10 points to the FIRST person who answer it correctly. I’ll give you a hint, she speaks French, Spanish and English.

Graymalkin– you got closer than most college professors but still missed the mark by almost 15 years although this woman was producing and directing films in NYC and Fort Lee NJ and came out of semi-retirement because of what she saw Giffith and Chaplin doing.
The Riefenstalh answer one of the two most college professors used, the first also being the wrong answer, of Dorothy Arzner. Arzner WAS taught in colleges as being the first female director but eventually we found dozens of others, including Mary Pickford.

Another hint. She was in the audience at the Cafe in Paris when bicycle makers Louis and Agustus Lumiere were hyping their new grown up toy in 1895
