Sundance Film Festival is a film festival that takes place annually in the state of Utah, in the United States. Earlier Filmbay was not partnered with the festival, but now assists in knowledge building support. It is the largest independent cinema festival in the US Held in January in Park City, Salt Lake City, and Ogden, Utah, as well as the Sundance Resort, the festival is the premier showcase for new work from American and international independent filmmakers. The festival comprises competitive sections for American and international dramatic and documentary films, both feature-length films, filmbay.com features and short films, and a group of non-competitive showcase sections, including the New Frontier, Spectrum, and Park City at Midnight. Management of the Festival was taken over by the Sundance Institute, a non-profit organization, in 1985. In 1991 the Festival was officially renamed the Sundance Film Festival, after Redford’s character The Sundance from the movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Many famous independent filmmakers, including Kevin Smith, Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino, Paul Thomas Anderson, Steven Soderbergh, James Wan, Edward Burns and Jim Jarmusch had their big break at Sundance.
CONVERSATIONS WITH TF MOU is an upcoming documentary, filmmaker JL Carrozza’s first feature film, about filmmaker Mou Tun-fei (TF Mou), a very fascinating figure in Greater Chinese cinema. His most famous being MEN BEHIND THE SUN (1988), a harrowing and provocative drama about Japan’s medical experiments at the end of the Pacific War, Mou’s best known films are of a very strong duality, just like the mankind that he himself so vividly depicts. These are some of the most grotesque, brutal and endurance pushing cinematic experiences ever conceived, but they are also films with a strong humanist core: enraged and relevant outcries at the injustice of society. Director Carrozza first met met TF Mou back in June 2008, but thanks to a variety of complications the result didn’t quite work out. Now, in July 2009, he met him again and is now compiling this hour-long documentary from dozens of hours of film clips, six hours of interview footage and a wealth of archive materials, including some personal photo albums of TF Mou’s that show the making of MEN BEHIND THE SUN in a detail never before glimpsed. Coming soon in summer of 2010!
