A MODEL PROPOSAL FOR MEDIA LITERACY CLASS (course) AT SECONDARY EDUCATION (lyceum) IN TURKEY
ABSTRACT
Teaching of media literacy at secondary education (14-18 years old, lyceum) is an important requisite likewise teaching of literacy at primary schools. To know the media and media messages; to understand language of media and relationships better, and to be familiar with the message production processes, ground and background of messages in context, it is required to be media literate. At the age of secondary education when personality is mostly shaped and preparations for professional life are following on, the relationship with media and the practices gotten from media continue lifelong. Practices of learning, getting information, acculturation and entertainment are laid in this age. Youths, our assurance of future should be trained and growth with loyalty, national interests and awareness of citizenship which is cornerstone of democracy to be ensured with teaching of media literacy.
Objective of this dissertation is to develop a scoop and content framework for the media literacy curriculum for the secondary education in Turkey. In the countries developed at media literacy education; stages and processes of development, pursued policies, prominent media literacy standards, curricula, lesson plans were examined.
Main headings of secondary education media literacy class are determined as follows: Means of communication, especially each medium of media; media message genres like news, documentary and film; most common concepts at media literacy education; instructional methods of media literacy, fundamental issues about pre-production and production stages of messages which affects the quality of information; influence of messages after received by individuals. These headings and subheadings were identified and individually analyzed.
A practically applicable model is proposed for students, parents and researchers, program developers and teachers; official decision makers who are responsible to organize and implement of this education. This model proposed for the secondary educational level media literacy class.

‘requisite – equal to the- ( the ‘likewise’ doesn’t fit there)
for professional life are- started- (following on aren’t words we use together and they don’t fit there)
entertainment -are made- ( are laid doesn’t make sense there)
It would make sense if you said ‘pattrens are laid’ but Practices aren’t laid, they’re practiced, or done, or made.
‘Youths’ You’ll have to say ‘As youths, ‘
And I dont’ know what you mean by ‘trained and growth with loyalty’. Growth doesn’t make sense there, it should be grown, but the whole phrase should be cut out. Or reword it.
Our national interests-
‘which is THE cornerstone’ ‘democracy, (comma) Then you need to start a new paragraph. This is too hard to read as it has no paragraphs.
