Question by Jeremy E: Can anyone clarify some copyright issues for a beginning filmmaker?
My friends and I, like many people nowadays, have made a handful of independent movies in the past. We just wrote a new one which we want to send to local festivals, but I want to make sure that I don’t break any copyright laws. I know big things like the use of a song must be avoided, but does anyone have a good resource for what can and cannot be used? Example: product names are mentioned but not seen. It’s smaller things like that that have us confused. I know this is a confusing question. Thanks for anyone who can help.

There are more than copyright laws to be looked into. you should also examine intellectual property rights, trademark laws, discrimination laws, etc. You can be sued or penalized by a number of groups for all sorts of content violations. The best thing to do is to double check everything with anyone that could claim that you have slandered or otherwise infringed on their rights.
