Question by boop: How to prepare to be a documentary filmmaker?
I am a senior in high school, and I didn’t do very well. I have an 83% average, took rigorous courses, but didn’t do any extracurriculars beyond newspaper and the morning announcements program. So now we’re expected to look at colleges, and I am LOST. For the last couple of years, I’ve been really interested in becoming a documentary filmmaker. But I’m having a difficult time finding schools that offer film programs that aren’t hell to get into.
I was planning on attending my local community college for a couple years, where a few comprehensive film courses are offered. I was also planning on taking journalism and sociology classes.
I just need help… I need to know if I’m a lost cause. My guidance counselor is of little assistance to me, and I don’t know what to do. 🙁

You are not a lost cause. Becoming a documentary film-maker is almost certainly a lost cause. Many more people want to enter this field than are needed. Journalism and sociology are also fields that often do not lead to employment. The best fields for employment include health care, psychology (requires a Psy.D. or Ph.D.), accounting, engineering, computer science, high school teaching, and law. Good luck.
