I want to add some basic effects, cut and crop some videos i have on my laptop and i was wondering what the best free software is to download for this is.

There is a free program called VideoSpin. It is developed by pinnacle. You can check the website www.videospin.com for more details. (downloading may require free registration, i am not sure about that.)
