BLACK DYNAMITE premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2009 and was released in October via Sony/Apparition but has only shown on a limited basis in select cities. A festival success and audience favorite, BLACK DYNAMITE has been one of the most anticipated independent films of the year, yet despite local demand, was not scheduled to show in the Bay Area. “When we found out local theater chains opted not to show BLACK DYNAMITE, we took it upon ourselves to bring the film to the Bay Area without them,” explained Kahlil Karn, founder of the Oakland Underground Film Festival. Directed by Scott Sanders, staring Michael Jai White, the action-packed Kung-Fu comedy is rooted in the great traditions of American Blaxploitation films like Shaft (1971), Super Fly (1972), and The Mack (1974).
