A MODEL PROPOSAL FOR MEDIA LITERACY CLASS AT SECONDARY EDUCATION IN TURKEY
ABSTRACT
Teaching of media literacy at secondary education (14-18 years old) is an important requisite equal to the teaching of literacy at primary schools. To know the media and media messages; to understand language of media and relationships better, and to be familiar with the message production processes, ground and background of messages in context, it is required to be media literate. At the age of secondary education when personality is mostly shaped and preparations for professional life are started, the relationship with media and the practices gotten from media continue lifelong. Practices of learning, getting information, acculturation and entertainment are made in this age. As youths our assurance of future, should be educated and grown with loyalty, national interests and awareness of citizenship which is the cornerstone of democracy, to be ensured with teaching of media literacy.
Objective of this dissertation is to develop a scoop and content framework for the media literacy curriculum for the secondary education in Turkey. In the countries developed at media literacy education; stages and processes of development, pursued policies, prominent media literacy standards, curricula, lesson plans were examined.
Main headings of secondary education media literacy class are determined as follows: Means of communication, especially each medium of media; media message genres like news, documentary and film; most common concepts at media literacy education; instructional methods of media literacy, fundamental issues about pre-production and production stages of messages which affects the quality of information; influence of messages after received by individuals. These headings and subheadings were identified and individually analyzed.
A practically applicable model is proposed for students, parents and researchers, program developers and teachers; official decision makers who are responsible to organize and implement of this education. This model proposed for the secondary educational level media literacy class.

Teaching of media literacy in secondary education (14-18 years old) is as important as teaching of literacy in primary schools. To know the media and media messages, to understand the language of media and relationships better, and to be familiar with the message production processes, ground(?) and background of messages in context, one must be media literate. At the age of secondary education when adult personalities begin to be shaped and preparations for professional life are started, one’s relationship with media and the practices learned from media become engrained. Practices of learning, acquiring information, acculturation and entertainment are made at this age. As youths, our assurances for the future should be educated and grown with loyalty, national interests and awareness of citizenship which is the cornerstone of democracy, to be ensured with teaching of media literacy. (I don’t know what this last sentence means, so I can’t edit it.)
