Question by SilverSky: do you think that this unpaid internship is a waste of time?
i’m trying to get back into film and on film sets (i majored in film/tv a few years ago) and so i work a reg job but this summer have a 4 day workwk and get mondays off. so on my mondays off i’ve been “interning” at a film distribution company in l.a. the problem is it’s unpaid (of course) and all i seem to be doing is getting coffee and answering phones (which i hate). one of the people that i answer phones for is the head of production so my only motivation i guess in staying with it and working for free on my day off is if she could get me an on-set job. do you think i should continue with this or are they just using me for free labor and most likely will not help me get what i want?
i also have to use my car sometimes and they don’t even pay for gas or for lunches. also i get a parking sticker but they don’t like it if i go out for lunch since it means they would have to give me more stickers than if i would stay there for lunch. seems really petty to me considering i’m free labor!

You have the good balance. Anything that would be worthy of putting on a resume for the future would be good for you now. I would just make sure that you are not showing any displeasure by feeling that doing these tasks are below you. Its just a stepping stone to something better.
