As a faculty member of the Expeimental Animation Program at Caifornia Institute of the Arts for several years, it was my pleasure to conduct the filmmaking techniques class for for upper-level undergrads and incoming graduate students. Most of my students had not made a film before; and this class served as a primer for 16mm production and post-production processes. Each student came up with an idea for their own 45-second film; then proceeded to storyboard, shoot and edit over the course of the semester. Each student had three hours to shoot their project; with total responsibility for the planning, directing set and equipment prep, lighting and cinematography. As the class was designed for students in the experimental animation program, our workshop productions include an inventive mix of live-action, animation and in-camera effects.
