There are a lot of factors to take into account when searching for a Washington film school. The first one is to identify what part of the state you want to reside. Mind you, various regions have several significant differences. Would you prefer the hills and plains of the interior and eastern regions of Washington, or the forests and rocky coastlines of the western side of the state? If you’re eyeing for a metropolitan life, would you like to be in Seattle or Spokane? Or near Portland, Oregon?
Secondly, you need to know what it is that you’re actually looking for in a film school. If you are a budding Director, then you should be sure that the schools you survey have strong directorial programs. If you’re more interested in film editing, make sure to look into the programs that the school has for you to use such as Adobe Premiere or Avid. You want to be sure you are learning programs that are used in the industry.
You also need to consider the type of program that the school offers. Get acquainted with the teaching methods that have worked for you in the past. Are you okay with a school that makes use of traditional instruction or do you want to veer away from tradition and choose a mentor-apprentice program instead? True, various methods have different advantages but to be successful, programs have to take into account the strength of the students. Some people learn better on their own, left to discover what they are capable of; while others find the guidance and experience of a mentor helping them and providing them with the handles to be more effective. In selecting your Washington film school, always take into account the approach that allows you to learn best.
Finally, be sure you know what it is you actually want to do. Would you like to direct movies or edit them? Or does being part of a technical crew become more appealing to you working on lights and sounds, props and stage design? By knowing exactly what you want to do, you’ll find it easier to focus on your chosen field. This is your education, and you must be sure that you get the most out of it. Still, regardless of the Washington film school that you attend, the mere act of enrolling in one will lead you to the path to filmmaking success.
