tape recorder (back when there was actual reel to reel tape involved), composed some interview questions, and set about interviewing my mother, father, and sister. I asked questions that prompted memories and stories about our family as I was growing up–not just about me, but about what it was like to be them, in their own roles and lives, during those years; where they had come from; where they still wanted to go.
The Process
Armed with these audio interviews, I then spent hours going through family slides, picking ones that corresponded to the story lines in the interviews, and showed us growing up, growing together, and eventually even growing apart as we kids got older and started going our own ways.
The tricky part was getting the tape recorder playing and the slides advancing one at a time in the projector, so
