Question by angeldaze29: How do you become a Production Assistant?
I’m a high school junior, interested in a career behind-the-scenes of television/film. I know that internships and helping out with student films are a good jumping off point, but what kind of college education should I be focusing on?

A degree in radio/TV/film or film studies is probably the most useful degree for that kind of job. Internships and helping out with student films will give you experience as well as potential contacts. But it’s also just a matter of persistence. You’ll need to relocate to New York or L.A., find a place to live (and NYC is really expensive), and then just start looking for work. Be prepared to change jobs when a better opportunity comes along and get to know as many people as possible because networking is really important as a way of finding the next job. You can expect to work long hours for little pay when you first start out because that’s just the nature of the business. It helps a lot to be a positive, outgoing person and to attend business-related receptions, parties and social functions just so that you can meet people. You really need to be sure that this is the career you want because it takes a lot of determination and perseverance to be successful.
