SNL skits are written mostly by the performers on the show. There are other writers of course. You had better be very funny and be able to think on your feet. They do a lot of last minute changes. Seth Meyers does a huge part of the writing currently and is in charge of any changes in the script. My best friends brother works on the show and I have gone to the dress rehearsal (open to the public) and pre dress rehearsals (private.) They work on the script at the beginning of the week and start rehearsals on Thursday. The one and only run through is Saturday at 8 right before the show. It is about 2 hours long and then they kick the dress rehearsal audience out and do last minute edits of what worked best and fits the time frame. and then showtime. I am amazed at what goes into it. I have seen Seth do a scene that was really funny then make a few slight changes and it is so much funnier.
