Illegal downloads of online free movies and bootleg movies continue to rise in spite of the industry prosecuting those they find doing so. In fact, prosecution rates are extremely low, although the industry could do more to promote legal movie downloads and make it impossible to copy or download media files.
The illegal download problem is not due to individuals downloading the occasional movie or music track, but those that download them and then make copies to sell both at home (usually in Asia) or on sites such as eBay. Then they print the disks and have the sleeves professionally printed to look like the genuine article. You might not expect to see these items on sale in your local mall record store (Oh Ye?), but go to eBay and tell me which are legal and which are not!
The Legality of Bootleg Movies
The argument continues as to the legality of using peer to peer (P2P) file sharing services to download bootleg movies after the payment of a single lifetime membership fee. Who really cares anymore? The arguments regarding bootleg movies are well known, and the music industry is being hit even harder. Although it is correct that it should be made more difficult for people to download copyright-protected material without paying for the download, why is it so simple for them to do this?
It’s much the same situation as a grocer leaving his store open at night and asking customers to take what they want and leave the cash in the till, but not to steal anything until he returns next morning. Have what you like, and make sure you leave payment on the counter.’ How laughable would somebody be if they actually did such a thing, yet that is exactly what the movie and music industries are doing by making such files available for download, but asking us not to. They could put a copy or download block on their files!
I Am Not in Favor of Downloading Bootleg Movies
Let me make it clear right now where my stance is on this matter: I am not in favor of you downloading movies or music free, but neither am I in favor of big corporations with all their resources expecting me to do something about it – even to trying to close websites. It is illegal to download copyright material, and if it was made in the last 60 years it will almost certainly still be under copyright, unless it has been published into the public domain. Then it is free for all.
This has infuriated the movie and music industries to the extent that they have managed to persuade the U.S. government to extend the copyright period from 50 years to 60 years after the original publication or the death of the originator. With respect to movies, they have to be made prior to 1950 or even earlier in order to be in the public domain so that you can download it without further permission. In fact, there are some artists that offer their work online free of charge through file sharing networks: these are usually new to music and movie production and are offering samples of their work free of charge to rack up a good fan-base prior to launching their major work. It gets their name known so that their next ‘Big Thing’ will hit the ground running – but I digress.
There are several websites online offering legal music, games and online free movies for the price of a one-time fee. Some of these are available through large video warehouses, with thousands of legal videos to offer that are legal to download because permission has been given by the copyright owner.
Falling Coconuts
However, there are more online free movies that are no more than bootleg movies, downloaded in spite of copyright and distributed on P2P file sharing networks. Whichever you use is your choice, but you can choose between the legal video downloads and online free movies they offer, or the bootleg movies and trust to not being caught: very few have been, and many believe it to be worth the risk.
I disagree: even though it is more likely for you to be killed by a falling coconut than caught illegally downloading bootleg movies using online free movies P2P software, I believe that you should take care to download your music and movies legally – there are many of them although the same software service is used to download both. Incidentally, more people die through coconuts falling on their heads than get killed by sharks each year – so stick that in your pipe and smoke it!
