Question by Katie Mc: I got this idea for a documentary. Where should I start?
I’m an amateur filmmaker and got this idea for a documentary. I like to call it 40 days in Africa. It would be the story of a popular Christian band and a filmmaker (me) going through African villages, doing concerts, evangelism, and things of the sort. I want to know the best place to start. I’m going to be attending film school later this year to learn everything about the actual film end of it, but I want to know what I should do first on the planning end. I have a couple bands in mind, but I need to know the best way to go about pitching it to them. It would be great if someone experienced in the documentary film industry could help me out with this. I also would like to know what kind of equipment I would need. I’m looking at investing in the Sony HDR-FX1. Another thing I would like to know is how I should go about looking for funding. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Have you ever made any kind of film at all? Try making a five-minute video with a local band, a kind of behind-the-scenes thing. You will find out very quickly what the challenges are.
I’m made a couple of little vids about local bike racing, very amateurish stuff, and man, did I learn a lot!
It sounds like a great idea to me, so definitely go in that direction. It’s a long road, literally and figuratively. Good luck!
