www.carbonated.tv Derek Magyar recently sat down with Carbonated.TV to discuss his directorial debut “Flying Lessons” set for theatrical release this November. The film is about a girl who is forced to reckon with her father’s suicide by returning home after she has hit rock bottom. Derek Magyar opens up the flying lessons he has had to go through and the ones that we ourselves must go through. Although this may be Derek’s first attempt at directing, he is not new to the film scene. Many of you may recognize him as X from “Boy Culture,” a film telling the tales of a male escort who is entangled in romantic relationships with his roommates and an elderly client. Magyar may be one talented guy, able to take a successful dabble at acting and directing not long after graduating from Cal Arts, but “Flying Lessons” represents something much bigger than Derek himself. The film represents the return of genuine filmmaking, a type of moviemaking that is unfazed by bureaucratic studio agendas and is fully invested in creating emotionally moving art. Magyar’s film has been able to cross beyond the inherent limitations of independent films and will be theatrically released in November. Besides that achievement in itself, Hal Holbrook’s amazing performance in the film is receiving much Oscar buzz. But Derek doesn’t need an accolade to feel the full worth of his film.
