This was something I wrote, edited and stared in as part of Salford Filmonik Kabaret in November 2010. This is a 48-hour film challenge, well a 57-hour filmmaking jam session, organised by the Filmonik troupe of filmmakers. The gestation of the idea was that I was 24-hours into the session with nothing to show for it. I hadn’t been able to get over a shortage of actors and locations. In a flash of inspiration I wrote a script to be performed by me with my friend Clay Whitter — a fellow filmmaker also finding frustration. I was to have him has my creative gremlin tormenting me to make a film. I envisioned it as a very slapstick comedy. Clay’s gremlin producing an array of movie-genre props and poking me with them to write a script. Music was also to be key with genre rifts playing over the monologue giving a full genre “feel” to the sections. I wrote the script/monologue at 10AM on the Saturday of the Kabaret — 33-hours to the screening on Sunday. I then pitched this to my fellow filmmakers. Thankfully Clay liked the idea, as did two fellow filmmakers, Paul Anderton and Fraser Fortune. We then set about creating an office set and lighting it at the end of the corridor. At this point my partners-in-crime suggested making it a film-noir rather than a slap-stick comedy. The monologue, the black and white setting and the fatalistic ending just seemed to fit the bill. In 1995, he was interviewed by Survivors of the Shoah, a foundation created by Steven Spielberg dedicated to archiving Holocaust survivors’ testimonies. Mr. Steiner narrates over motion graphics of archival stills to tell his story of liberation.
