Madholal Keep Watching is quintessentially Mumbai. It’s a portrayal of Bombay that’s more real & true than Maniratnam’s suprehit Bombay. As a mumbaikar himself, Jai could touch a raw nerve that Mani as an outsider could not. The film has a quite few memorable moments of highs & lows of life of ordinary mumbikars affected or unaffected by every twist, turn & implosion in this speeding city-ark. The fun of Mumbai is frothy as the poignant moments are heart-wrenching.
Jay ends his film in an agit-pop way. Another very rare way of ending a film these days. Perhaps, his sensitivity stopped him to go for a predictably optimistic end. So he traded happy-ending
