Question by BMTH: what camera should i get?
A 35 mm digital or film single-lens reflex camera with an in-lens light meter and manual control of aperture, shutter speed and focus is required. (No point-and-shoot cameras)
Students are required to purchase film.
i need a camera for a school (10th gr) digital photography course, that meets those requirements, and i have some questions (that are going to be unbelievably stupid, so forgive me 😉 )
1. if im getting a digital camera, do i still need to get film?
2. is there any good digital slr camera i should check out that meets those requirements? Also, id really like a camera that doesnt produce images that look sharpened – i like images that look soft but are clear (if that even makes sense? xD).

you don’t need to get film.
You are getting a digital camera. If you buy film, where are you going to put it? in your fridge where it will poison the rest of your food.
The traditional choices are Canon and Nikon
Canon 550d
Nikon d3100 or d5000
Those are the cameras that i would generally recommend. The other ones are either poorly made (1000d, d3000) with very few features (i.e. it might be missing, live view, video recording, etc etc). If they aren’t cheap, they are far too expensive and the extra features are redudent (canon 7d, canon 5d, 1ds, nikon d3x) – I don’t need 90 AF points.
After you broke your piggy bank buying hte camera, you’ve got to buy lenses. The kit lenses are fine. However in my honest opinion, the best lens, for weight, price and quality is the 50mm f/1.8. It is fast; it is really clear (“sharp” in photography lingo) and it is light enough to carry around all day.
additional information:
buying an used film camera will be much cheaper than buying a digital slr. Although there will be additional costs to keep in mind…
1. film
2. developing film
3. scanning film (you can get your photolab to do this for you too)
– and generally you have to wait a day or two before you get your resutls back. With a dslr you can get instant feedback by plugging it into the computer.
But the cost savings… .. ….
For example: a canon AE-1 Program (a film slr) can start from 20 dollars to about 150 if you buy from a reseller like www.adorama.com Whereas a 550d will be a few hundred.
