Question by Traditionalfreedomlover: What is a fair estimate for a screenwriter to charge an author to write his book into a movie screenplay?
The screenwriter is not well known but not a novice at all. He has an acclaimed indie film under his belt, and a couple of books. His Mgr. will try to option the screenplay and he and I would split 50-50 if it sold, but if I want to hire him to write it, it would cost about $ 3,000. I would retain all movie rights and could shop it myself elsewhere if I like. Is this a reasonable amount or crazy? Any thoughts from those in the biz?

It’s crazy.
If the screenwriter wants to turn your book into a screenplay he pays you, not the other way around.
