Question by Ashlee J: Questions about college, please help! Information included.?
Hey you guys! I’m currently a Junior at a texas high school and I had a few quick questions!
First, I’m going to give you a little information about my academic career:
GPA: 3.37
Current IB Diploma student.
I took a lot of regulars classes last year, but this year (since entering IB) i am in ALL pre-ap/ap/IB classes
My schedule this year:
Pre AP Pre Cal
IB English III
AP Latin III
Pre AP Physics I
Honors Aquatic Science
IB Psychology
IB History
Next year my schedule will be as follows:
AP Calculus AB
IB English IV
AP/IB Latin IV
IB Biology II
AP Independent study/analysis of film
AP Literary Genre
IB Theory Of Knowledge
IB History of the Americas
Plus after school Speech And Debate (on a 5.0 scale, so its an honors class as well).
I took the SAT in january, but i only got an 1800 (im in classes to improve my score, and i KNOW i can do better-i was really sick the week before and the day of-i was continually blacking out and throwing up and getting dizzy) so i’ve scheduled to take it again, under better circumstances. Plus, since having taken that SAT, ive also been put on medicine for ADD and its helping wonders as well.
I do a lot of community service (by the time i graduate, ill have 150 hours for IB requirements, plus whatever else i get done). I am in Green Club, River Watch, Little Theater Company, and Film Club. I recently took a Digital Filmmaking class outside of school, Ive taken acting/singing lessons, photography classes, Im taking a writing class at ACC for fun, soon, and this summer I’m spending three weeks at an intensive acting camp in Los Angeles.
Im also scheduled to take the ACT soon, and im trying to volunteer at my local art museum, as well as find somewhere that i can take art history classes.
I have a college counselor who is helping me organize everything and apply and all that.
I also spend a TON of time at my church-volunteering and helping out. Sundays and tuesdays I lead groups for middle schoolers and high schoolers (girls) and wednesday nights I attend the high school services.
I’ve missed quite a bit of school because I get ill frequently and its always really severe, never something simple, but i always get everything made up and get caught up on time, and it rarely hurts my grades.
There might be more, but I cant think of it currently.
Anyway, my question:
I’m wanting to go to college in New York, Chicago, Washington DC, Seattle, or California, but I’m not sure which schools I’d have the best chance, or any chance at all, at. I’m wondering if any of you could give me advice/help on this, maybe list a few schools I should check into. I’m really interested in NYU and might apply early decision there, but im not sure. Also, schools like Cambridge-I think it would be amazing to study in another country, would I have any chance there? Or any other schools abroad like that?
Thank you for your time!

You seem like a good student, involved in many things, and on the right path.
NYU is a tough school to get into. Don’t limit yourself to only the large cities: urban universities have their own special challenges.
as for being sick the days before the SAT, no sympathy from me: I was royally hung-over and scored in the 95th percentile in math, and overall was in the 90th percentile. sick as a dog that day I was….. LOL
