It depends. If you have no experience in filmmaking, a BA in film can be very helpful. Some schools focus the film degree on a specific field (writing, editing, etc.) while others offer a degree on various areas in one (film).
In the workplace, you’ll see a mix. Some employers look down on people who went to school because they never did, and so “experience is all that matters.” Other fellow graduates will admire the fact that you took time to get properly trained, and will count school as part of your experience. Eitherway, you can usually get both schooling and experience at the same time, as most film degrees require you to make a few films in order to graduate.
Best of luck.
