First of all, none of them are FILM editors. They are all video editing programs. If you are really starting with real film and digitizing it, you may want to go to Final Cut Studio as it has features to accomodate syncing audio with film registration marks a cut lists and so on, features only a real film maker will ever need.
If you’re not really dealing with FILM, then Final Cut Express or Adobe Premier Pro 2 are both great places to begin to learn real editing. And what you learn there will translate easily to the professional tools you will move up to later.
ANY time you spend learning iMovie or Windows Movie Maker will just be a waste because they are so different from the pro tools, what you learn is useless later.
If you are really just playing with video as a hobby, those programs are fine.
