Why do film editors use the fade technique from scene to scene? Is it to subtly transition from scene to scene or is there a deeper meaning?

Fade can be a symbol of change. Someone dies, a period of time ends, a new beginning after the fade, etc. It can also be literal meaning that the viewpoint of the camera is fading away.
