Question by Diverging Point: What is up with 20-30 year olds who say they have “never used film”?
I have to ask. Lately, I’ve been seeing a lot of young adults around my age, in their 20’s and early 30’s, who say “they have never used film.” Give me a break. Less than 10 years ago, most people were still using film. In fact, none of my friends had a digital camera until about 2002 or so at the very earliest. One of my friends graduated in 2002, and all his pictures are on 35mm film.

I think everyone has taken pictures when they were kids…pictures with your friends, or at school field trips, etc. I started taking pictures when I was 8 about years old. So let’s do the math. If somebody is at least 19 or 20 years old, then film was definitely still in the mainstream when they were kids. I mean, even if they just used a disposable camera or a simple point and shoot 35mm camera. But people saying they’ve never used film before is total BS.

If this was the year 2030 and digital cameras had been around for entire generations…then yeah okay I could understand people claiming they have never loaded a camera with film.

I’m thinking that if someone is at least 18 or so and they try to claim that they never used film, then probably the only reason they ever got a camera to begin with was for MySpace. I mean otherwise, are they trying to say that they NEVER took pictures when they were kids??

Can someone give me another possible explanation? What else could it be? Film was definitely in the mainstream when they were kids, and yet they apparently never wanted to take pictures. They only got interested in a camera right around the same time MySpace started (2003).

Just curious (and maybe bored). And half-expecting to get reported. But oh well. Any thoughts?

Why don’t people just admit it? If their FIRST camera was a digital P&S camera, then the reason they got it was because they wanted to take MySpace pictures.
That Guy, you’re probably right. But I’ve been coming across people who say they have literally never used film before…they’ve never touched one, never loaded a film camera. That doesn’t make any sense if they’re at least 18 or 19 or so.

I’ve always used film, but I didn’t know how to develop my own film until recently. I set up a darkroom in my garage and I develop B&W prints myself too.
MixedMojo…excellent answer. But still, regardless of how long digital might have been around (still not very long)…someone who is in their 20’s IS old enough to have used film. So if they still say that they NEVER used film, then that means they were never interested in taking any pictures before. My question is…why?
