Question by [x]Flower Madness{!}: What path does one take to become a screenwriter/film maker?
I’ve always enjoyed writing stories and novels, but I’m really into movies and always dreamed of making my own. Particulary in the horror/fantasy realm.
I’m 17, and don’t really have experience in acting, screenwriting, film making, etc. I kind of lack any hobbies besides writing right now. In my creative writing class we did have to write a script and I wrote a comedy piece, which I was pleased with except the editing was bad.
I’ve always been shy but I’m thinking of getting into acting classes because I think I’d be good at it. However, like I said I’m more interested in working behind the camera, particulary in the actual story writing. I’ve been torn between that or going to college then graduate school to be a family therapist or something like that. I’m just really confused on what to do. I’m currently a junior, and my grades aren’t that great so I was going to go to community college for two years then transfer to a university ( I live in California ). Could I still do that and get into film? How does that work? Is art/ film school an actual college or something extra? Is there anything I can do to prepare for this kind of career? I’m still practicing writing but I can’t really afford camera equipment and such to practice film making.
I’m kind of lost, any ideas?

I would say maybe a major in Literature with a minor in Film School. Sounds like your most important skill would be writing.
