Question by Josh: Which city is better to start a career in film in — New York or LA?
I know this is a no-brainer — LA. However, my sister and brother-in-law, who told me to go to LA to pursue my dreams of writing and directing in the first place, are now telling me to start in New York, get a job at a TV station, and this way I could do stand up comedy also (which I kind of want to do too — even though they said it would be impossible to get into that originally, when they were telling me I should go to LA). They said I would have to start at a TV station. Guess what? My brother-in-law’s sister wanted to be an actress, she too went to college in New York, got a job at a TV station, and has been working there ever since. I didn’t throw that in their faces though. I planned on taking the TV Productions class in my school next year, even though it’s movies, not TV, that I want to work with. What do you think I should do? I already know what I want to do, (go to LA for it), which they’re now telling me is a bad idea because they say I’d spend my life paying back loans.
Also, if I went to school in New York I’d probably be living with my dad, which I don’t want to do, because once I go to college I want to permanently leave the nest if you know what I mean.

yes, LA ovbiously is the easier place, its practically there for people trying to get their shot at fame or to persue their writing/direscting/acting.. dreams.
But on the other hand New york has a twist.
you can really hit the big time and become very succesful starting at new york, but the disatvantages are that you will have to work ALOT harder and it will also take longer than heading to LA.
The thing is if you start small and make your way up and eventually become succesful in New York, you will be alot more respected possibly.
although remember you really have to have talent or else theres no chance for you.
theres alot of people out there (Newyork or LA) that are trying the same thing you are, so you really have to have something special.
