Any professional photographer wants nothing less than a sharp image, so their choice of camera is nothing to gamble on. There are many reasons why you would want to narrow down your choices to a DSLR camera, rather than to most of the compact digital cameras available today. Your digital photography work has to be at its best in order to attract more clients. Now that inexpensive or basic digital camera choices are available, and almost everyone interested has one, professionals have to offer digital photo services with distinctive quality. That, of course, means acquiring the right camera, even if it has to be expensive, or your work will not convince clients to buy your product and you will lose out on revenue.
Although a DSLR camera would have been very expensive and only useful in taking stills a few years back, prices have gone down considerably. Their performance has improved to include high definition video capabilities. This has attracted some independent filmmakers who know that even if compact digital cameras can be cheaper in most cases, finding the best required for their work will be even more expensive than DSLRs.
As far as digital camera choices go, mechanics have proved better than electronics. While you manually control the shutter in DSLR cameras to instantly allow light to reach the sensor, compact cameras have their sensors electronically activated, and the truth is that it doesn’t happen fast enough to suit the requirements of professional photography work.
In addition to the sensor in a DSLR camera being mechanically activated, it is also bigger, which means more light is added to the sharpness of the captured images. This partly explains why such a camera will still manage to take quality shots in areas with less light, even without the need to use a flash. Given that most compact digital cameras are built for portability and are half the size of the smallest DSLR, their sensors are also small and this affects the sharpness of images.
Even though the compacts have the capability to achieve more and smaller pixels, there will not be enough light on each of those pixels, so sharpness and clarity are affected. Certainly the rules of physics remain unchanged and it is therefore the quality of the pixels that matters. There are also more choices of lenses with any DSLR and you only need the right one for each shot you want to take. Overall, more control and more accessories translate to better results.
