Question by Mrs. Travolta: Would I need to move to California if I want to become a filmmaker?
I am a high school student who is planning to attend film school to become a director. I have always loved filmmaking and can’t think of any carrer I would enjoy more.
The problem is, most movies are filmed in California and I just REALLY don’t want to live there. Could I be a director and still live in Virginia (only 4 hours away from NY)? I know my favorite director, M.Night Shyamalan films all of his movies in the state he lives in. Would it cost more to do that?
A little over a year ago, I had to move away from my grandma and two friends who I am extremely close to in Kansas due to my dad’s job. I still miss them every single day. I could’nt bare to move away more than driving distance away from my parents too! My mom and I are very close.
Thank you for your encouraging words! Yes I do plan to attend film school. I hope to attend NYU’s Tisch School of Arts if I can get enough money for that. It is one of the best film schools. If it cost too much then there are many other film schools in New York I can attend.

I don’t think that you would need to move to California to make it big. It doesn’t really matter what state you are in to produce a great movie. There might be quite a few good producers who live in Cal. and NY but you could be one of the first to be from Virginia! Go with what you want to do. Personally, I would not move to California. But are you planning on going to college? Then you could maybe go to a school in Cal. and move back to you home and produce. Go with your dream.
